This book discusses the basis of the Methodist Episcopal Church and how it was built on a basis of nonslaveholding. De Vinné's purpose in putting out the text was to respond to criticisms that had been leveled against the church in regards to slavery.

Daniel De Vinne helped organize and build the original Park Avenue United Methodist Church.
